1746  The College of New Jersey was chartered – later became Princeton University
1797  Andre-Jacques Garnerin became the first recorded parachutist – he jumped from a height of 3,000 feet
1883  The Metropolitan Opera House in NYC had its grand opening
1897  The world’s first car dealership opened in London
1907  The Panic of 1907 began when depositors began withdrawing their money from NYC banks – Westinghouse Electric went into receivership and several banks failed – loans by JP Morgan and the Treasury checked the panic
1920  Harvard professor and proponent of LSD Timothy Leary was born
1928  Herbert Hoover spoke of the “American system of rugged individualism”
1936  The first commercial flight from the mainland to Hawaii occurred
1938  The first Xerox copy was made – used powdered ink and an electrical charge
1942  Actress Annette Funicello was born – “Mickey Mouse Club”
1962  President Kennedy went on TV to inform the American people that he had ordered US forces to impose a blockade on Cuba due to the Soviet Union placing missiles on the island
1963  225,000 students boycotted Chicago schools in Freedom Day protests

2000  In a World Series game, Roger Clemens throws a broken bat at Mike Piazza
1991  Braves beat Twins 5-4 in 12 innings – Twins use World Series record 23 players in the game
1985  Kansas City wins their first ever World Series game
1975  Cincinnati wins game 7 of World Series to beat the Red Sox
1972  Oakland A’s win their 1st World Series in 42 years – Gene Tenace named MVP – he had 4 HRs in the series – hit 5 all year during the regular season
1967  In the AFL, Daryle Lamonica throws 4 TDs and Oakland holds Boston Patriots to 83 total yards in a 48-14 win – Oakland had 395 yards
1958  Elgin Baylor makes his NBA debut with the Lakers – entered Hall of Fame in 1977 – averaged 27.4 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 14 seasons
1957  Sam Jones makes his NBA debut with the Boston Celtics
1950  LA Rams set NFL scoring record – beat Baltimore 70-27 – they had 535 total yards in the game, Baltimore had 423
1920  8 members of the Chicago White Sox are indicted for allegedly throwing the 1919 World Series
