1860  Frontierswoman Annie Oakley was born
1889  A patent for the coin-operated phone was issued to William Gray of Hartford, Ct.
1899  Movie director Alfred Hitchcock was born
1907  The first taxi cab operated in NYC
1910  Florence Nightingale died at age 90 – famous for her care of British soldiers during the Crimean War
1913  Harry Brearly invented stainless steel
1914  Carl Wickman began Greyhound – the 1st U.S. bus line
1918  Opha Mae Johnson became the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Marines
1926  Cuban leader Fidel Castro was born
1934  Comic “Li’l Abner” makes its debut
1935  The first Roller Derby match was held in Chicago
1942  Walt Disney’s “Bambi” opened in NYC
