1921  A jury acquitted members of the White Sox in the “Black Sox Scandal” – members of the team had been accused of throwing the World Series

1924  Actor Carroll O’Connor was born – Archie on “All in the Family”

1934  Hitler became the country’s Fuhrer – President and Chancellor

1937  The Marijuana Tax Act was passed – possession became illegal

1943  PT-109, captained by Lt. John Kennedy, sank after being torpedoed

1950  Lance Ito was born – judge in OJ Simpson trial

1964  Pentagon reports that a U.S. destroyer was attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin by the North Vietnamese

1967  “In the Heat of the Night” with Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger opened in NYC

1985  A jumbo jet crashed at Dallas-Fort Worth while attempting to land – 137 died – caused by violent thunderstorms

1990  Iraq invaded Kuwait – over 100,000 soldiers attack the country – Hussein threatened to turn Kuwait City into a “graveyard” if any other country challenged him

2007  Fisher Price recalled 1 ½ million imported toys from China due to fears that the paint may be a health risk to children

1995  Toronto rookie pitcher Paul Menhart pitches a one hitter, but loses 1-0 to Baltimore – the one hit was a HR by Harold Baines

1992  Rollie Fingers and Tom Seaver inducted into the Hall of Fame – Fingers: 341 saves, 2.90 ERA, Cy Young and MVP in 1981 – Seaver: 311 wins, 2.86 ERA, 3 time Cy Young winner

1991  Rangers pitcher Mike Jeffcoat gets an RBI – 1^st AL pitcher to drive in a run since DH rule in 1973 – 1^st AL pitcher to get a hit since 10/2/1974

1990  NYY rookie Kevin Maas hits his 10^th HR in his 72^nd at bat – fastest ever to hit 10 HRs

1987  Reds Eric Davis hits his 30^th HR – becomes the 7^th player in MLB history to have 30 HRs and 30 steals in a season

1987  KC rookie Kevin Seitzer goes 6 for 6 (ties AL record) – will end up with 12 hits in 3 consecutive games (3^rd highest in MLB history)

1982  Rickey Henderson steals his 100^th base – 1^st player to ever steal 100 twice

1979  NYY Thurmon Thomas dies in a plane crash at age 32
