1943  The largest tank battle in history began as German tanks attacked Soviet forces – the battle of Kursk
1946  The bikini bathing suit made its debut in Paris – introduced by designer Louis Reard
1947  Strange debris was found near Roswell, New Mexico – alien crash? – military said it was a crashed weather balloon
